Though he could very easily topple the government and take over as the country’s new leader, V does not take advantage of his control on the Head, Eye and Ear. Much like how he kills the fingermen who were about to rape and kill Evey, he kills parts of the government in the figure of physical structures such as the Parliament, the Old Bailey, the Post Office Tower and Jordan Tower to release the people from the suffocating grasp of the authoritarian government. V’s attitude towards Evey is very similar to his approach towards the citizens of fascist U.K. It is at this moment that the reader can see how sincere V was in saying that he loves Evey-he saw even back then the woman that she can become, and he never forces her his ideals to replace her naivety instead, he helps her grow, experience suffering, and formulate her own ideas and independently reach her own understandings, proving that V acts on a quite distorted but well-meaning moral compass. Moreover, by the end of the book, Evey becomes noticeably more mature and smarter, even portraying a stronger self-esteem by stating that she has read more books and is therefore more capable of understanding V’s puzzling monologues. It is when Evey no longer feels fear that she becomes her own person and starts shaping herself based on her own will. Though it may be unsettling to say, it is a fact that Evey is grateful for experiencing the torture because she eventually realizes that no one can take away her integrity and that her freedom can only be taken away by her own fears. It is these two turnabouts that makes it difficult to understand V’s mindset, however his intentions are clear as he says so himself-he did it out of love and because he “wants to set free” (Moore 170) Yes, his way of showing love is very different from most people, however, he truly wants to release Evey from her habit of turning to older male figures for comfort, as well as her fear of losing parts of herself to the hands of authority. However, an unexpected and disturbing twist that shocked readers is in Issue #4 when V kicks Evey out of the Shadow Gallery and then pretends to be the government that tortures her in Issue #6. He gives her a sense of security and safety by taking her in to the Shadow Gallery he exposes her to books and the arts that have been banned and forgotten by the fascist regime, and perhaps the best part of their relationship is the fact that he ensures she has free will-often reminding her that she is not bound by any “deals. From the moment he first saw her, V has always taken care of Evey Hammond and does everything he can to help her become a strong independent woman.
